Excelsior erosion blankets are made of Aspen wood fibers that cling to the soil. Excelsior blankets break up heavy rainfall, which helps reduce sediment run-off. The R-1 blanket is covered with a top photodegradable plastic net with fibers evenly distributed over the entire area of the blanket. The S-2 blanket has both a top and bottom photodegradable plastic net. It can handle flow rates up to 7’ per second and slopes up to a 1:1. The SD-3 has heavy-duty plastic netting encased around the Aspen fibers’ top, bottom and edges. The SD-3 blanket can handle slope angles greater than 1:1 and water velocities up to 12’ per second.

Natural Blankets
Coir, coir/straw, and straw blanket usage has become very common among professionals in various industries due to its versatility. Coir (coconut fiber) is an abundant, renewable natural resource with an extremely low decomposition rate and a high strength compared to other natural fibers. The CC-4 100% coir blanket is designed to hold seeds and soil in place for severe 1:1 or greater slopes and as channel lining until vegetation is established.
The SC-3 30% coconut and 70% straw are used to control erosion on 2:1-1-1 slopes and is designed to handle medium flow in discharge channels and areas where protection is needed for more than one season. The SR-1 and SS-2 100% straw blankets are designed to last about 10 months on 3:1-2:1 slopes with moderate discharges of water channels.
Western Landscape Logs and Wattles
Western Xcel excelsior logs are designed to fit across high flow channel bottoms in order to slow down high water velocity flows, and stop silt movement. They absorb water up to seven times their weight. The Aspen fibers in the log offset undermining, over topping, and blowouts. Western Excel straw logs and wattles are designed to be used wherever straw/hay bales have been used as a sediment filter barrier in the roadside ditches, medians, swales, and around drop water inlets.
